Why support our club?
The Pierport Pony Club was formed in January 2013 to provide youth in Manistee County with an opportunity to extend their knowledge of horsemanship and riding. The club is a branch of United States Pony Clubs, which was formed in 1954. There are more than 600 Pony Clubs in the country, with more than 10,000 members.
There are currently 4 members of Pierport Pony Club along with 4 Junior Pony Clubbers, from across the county (Manistee, Bear Lake, Onekama, Kaleva, Frankfort), and we expect our membership to grow. The Pierport Pony Club is a separate program from 4-H. While most of our members are also supporters and participants in the Manistee County 4-H program, Pony Club is a separate entity with different programs and objectives. Pony Club has a structured educational component and leveled proficiency standards, described below. The experience and knowledge gained through participation in Pony Club is meant to compliment, and not replace, 4-H.
The Pierport Pony Club is seeking financial assistance to offset the costs associated with first year membership in the club. Families are responsible for annual membership dues of $180.00 per child to the national office, purchasing the Pony Club manuals, and for the costs involved with transporting horses to mounted meetings, purchasing appropriate safety equipment (helmets, boots), and the practical costs of raising an animal. These costs will be covered by each family.
Financial support from community groups would provide for additional costs, including:
Bi-monthly club meetings take place at the Stables at Westmoreland in Pierport, and we are fortunate that this space is being offered to our club for use at no cost. Similarly, several experienced adults are volunteering their time and talents to the youth in our club. Mounted instruction meetings are led by Ginger Wisseman, who is serving as District Commissioner for the club.
The club was founded by Mary Fleishman, and dressage trainer and instructor in the area. Mary was the former Commissioner for a Pony Club in Woodside, California, and both of her children were involved in Pony Club for many years. Assistance at the mounted meetings is provided by other local individuals with great knowledge to share with the young riders in our group.
Our club is part of the Great Lakes Regional Pony Clubs, which encompasses a large geographic area including Ohio, Illinois and Indiana. For our members to take part in the activities offered – such as regional rally competitions, quiz competitions, and leveled testing – we would need funds to travel to other clubs in order to participate.
